http://www.rkellyphoto.com/ Today the Wednesday guest Lecture was Richard Kelly. He gave a presentation of his own work with the Likes of Doc Martens and bands such as The Arctic Monkeys. He came to give a Studio and Location lighting refresher. Demonstrating how to use the location lights and seeing it tether captured in real time. I particularly enjoyed this workshop, from the gentle learning atmosphere to the time Richard spent with each of us after the session to talk over our work. Not to mention I am notoriously bad with studio lighting, I prefer natural location light so this workshop was valuable in that was as well as seeing how yet another photographer shoots. For today session we did something called Speed dating peer review. It is where we present one or a collection of images to our peers and tell them about our idea in two minutes. We tell them everything they need to know about the project and they ask questions in turn. After my idea change these are the images I managed to snap. I wanted the vibe of the TV show Outlander. My main inspiration for my new idea. These images were very quickly shot and not what I had originally planned but you work with what you have. I shot these in my back garden with this model. Sadly I had lost most of the available light and only had a harsh on camera flash. To battle this I turned all the lights on in the window and got a small warm lit camping lantern to get the effect seen. Sadly, due to the lack of light I found it difficult to focus as you can see in the landscape image. http://www.bellawest.co.uk/ Today we had a Visit from Bella West, a photographer from BIPP. She came to give is a workshop on lighting and creating your own style and brand. I really enjoyed this workshop because of the demonstration she gave us as pictured above. We got to see in real time what it was like photographing in different lighting locations and using completely natural light. Manipulating it to your own desire. It was also really great to see her come back to the studio after the shoots in different locations to see how she edits or uses Black and White to gain a certain effect. And not only do I think I learned valuable shooting and editing skills but the same can be said for learning to create my own brand. Sticking to my guns and not changing for a new photography trend that comes along. As October Begins we have our first Interim Exhibition in the Gallery space in Queensgate Market. We were tasked to submit 1 A2 image that represented your chosen theme. This was to say the least an interesting experience not only to present my own work but also to give and receive feedback from peers and staff alike. I'll admit at a student who went on placement I found it a little difficult to get back into the university evaluation mindset but after a few rounds and a handy sheet for help, I got the hang of it with my small group giving our peers our honest reviews. Above is the image I submitted for my chosen theme of Witches to marry alongside my dissertation. I printed on Matt paper as I thought it may have brought the warm colours I shot in. https://www.thelbt.org/ Something exciting happening this year that I am hoping to get involved in is the Live Brief we have for THD1383 Research and Development. The live briefs are small clientele tasks that we can explore alongside our work. This can be something that either has something to do with your chosen field or just an area of photography that interest you. For me the choice was clear from the opinions we were given. Aladdin will be played at the Lawrence Batley Theatre over Christmas and the theatre want some photographers to capture behind the scenes of the local actors, as well as the children that will be participating. They want to capture the rehearsal stages, both regular and dress. Since the semester has started I have done photo shoots along the theme of Witches and in Today's Lecture introducing THD1383 for Research and Development, we were prepped on what to do and expect from our first Interim Exhibition in the Market Gallery in Queensgate Market. We are to print ONE A2 image on any paper of our choosing and meet on the 3rd of October to all hang our own work in the gallery. This was a particularly fun experience. Curating my own work to display on the wall and hang it myself in a clean and orderly manner. It's something we haven't really done in previous years, Yes there was hanging our work in the base room but that was a little messier and just finding a space and hanging however you could. The exhibition will be the first time I am hanging my work professionally for the public eye. In a public space no less. This is also a great place to get feedback from the general public. Today's first class was an induction into THD1384 - Theory for photography. More specifically our dissertation. This was a really helpful first step into figuring out what to write about and what the reality of a Dissertation actually entails.  As said in the actual session the dissertation is not about what you know but what you think. The whole essay is about your opinion on your chosen topic. My topic is still undecided but with this first intro session I have a slightly more clear idea and path to what I feel confident talking about. We also found out our dissertation tutors, mine will be Dr Stella Baraklianou.
